P2/3 Beautiful Butterflies

25th Sep 2020

This week Jonah sent in a fantastic photo of a beautiful butterfly for us to have a look at.  We began to talk about butterflies and find out some facts about them.  Did you know that the largest butterflies can have wing spans of 28cm - that's almost the same size as a school ruler! Now that would be easy to spot for sure!

We thought about places that we usually spotted butterflies and went on a butterfly hunt through the school grounds.  Sadly it was a dull day and the only butterflies we spotted was the outside decoration at the nursery and a butterfly shaped chalk board!!  We decided that butterflies must like sunny weather when the flowers are open and smelling good.

We then had a chat about similarities and differences.  We compared our Pupil of the Day (Tia R) with a butterfly and discovered that some similarities were they both have legs, body and a head and liked sunny weather.  Some differences were that the butterfly had wings and could fly but sadly poor Tia couldn't and butterflies have antenna on there heads which Tia was glad she didn't have.

We then completed a table to record these similarities and differences and finished our Butterfly work with a Friday Art session to make a beautiful flower for our butterflies to sit on.

We really enjoyed our mini project this week and P2/3 are delighted to be bringing their super creations home today.  If you have time you can ask them about their butterfly work and see what they remember.
