P1 take their learning outside.

19th Jan 2026

Our Primary 1 pupils have been taking their literacy learning outdoors—and what a fantastic adventure it has been! Armed with sound clips, picture cards and plenty of enthusiasm, the children explored early reading skills in a fun, active way. They found sound clips hidden around our garden, listened carefully to them, blended the sounds together and matched the words to pictures.

Partner work added an extra layer of excitement and teamwork, as the children supported each other to solve challenges and celebrate their successes. The learning didn’t stop there—our pupils also practised blending by jumping onto letter spots, blending sounds as they moved. This energetic approach kept everyone engaged, moving and smiling!

Learning outdoors offers rich benefits for children, boosting wellbeing, encouraging curiosity, and helping children make meaningful connections with the world around them. Most importantly, it makes learning active, hands-on and fun—and when children are having fun, they learn even more.

In P1, we try to do some learning outdoors every day and the children are already showing us just how they can be confident, capable learners when learning comes alive outdoors.
